A total of ninety (90) computer sets installed with DOST-STARBOOKS were turned over to identified beneficiaries in North Cotabato early this 2022.
STARBOOKS is an acronym for Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Station. Known as ‘Library in a Box’, it is accessible even without internet connection making it an ideal tool for knowledge and learning resource in remote or far-flung areas.
The distribution was done after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the implementation of the DOST-STARBOOKS between the Department of Science and Technology 12 (DOST XII) and respective congressional districts of the province.
Twenty-three (23) units were handed over among beneficiaries of 1st District last January 17 at The Vineyard, Midsayap; 37 units were released for 2nd District in the afternoon of same day at the Boylyn Pensione Plaza, Kidapawan City; and, 30 units were given to beneficiaries of 3rd District last January 18 at the Tulunan Municipal Rooftop.
Each beneficiary received a STARBOOKS-ready facility consisting of a computer set (CPU, monitor, AVR, speaker, keyboard) along with computer stand/ table and a Router.
Recipient-institutions comprising LGUs/ ELCAC-barangays, libraries, schools including Madrasas (Islamic Schools) were identified and endorsed by the Representatives of congressional districts, according to DOST XII Regional Director Sammy Malawan.
Representatives namely Congressman Joel Sacdalan of 1st District; Cong. Rudy Caoagdan of 2nd District; and, Cong. Jose Tejada of 3rd District were all personally present during the scheduled MOU Signing and Turnover Ceremony, along with several Mayors, Barangay Captains and School Principals, with Vice Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza joining the activity in Kidapawan.
“As we [DOST] bring benefits of S&T closer to the people in the countryside, to your respective constituents, we are glad that we have supportive congressional, provincial and local government units in the Province of North Cotabato”, RD Malawan said.
He added that DOST-STARBOOKS was identified as one of the programs under the National Priority Plan for CY 2021 and given the new normal, the more that this kind of program becomes relevant to the needs of the society.
Developed by the Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) of the DOST, STARBOOKS was awarded the 2017 Outstanding Library Program of the Philippine Association of Academic Research Librarian, Inc. along with many other recognitions. It was also awarded the Presidential Citation for International Innovative Library Projects by the American Library Association (ALA). ####
