DOST XII – SOUTH COTABATO HOLDS “STARBOOKS ALL-IN ACTIVITY”

With the theme “Accessing Wealth of Science and Technology Information through DOST Digital Library”, the Department of Science and Technology XII (DOST XII)-Provincial Science and Technology Office in South Cotabato conducted a STARBOOKS ALL-IN Activity on 24 May 2022 at Cinco Niñas Restaurant and Convention Center, Koronadal City, South Cotabato.

Taking the lead for S&T Information, DOST XII inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) together with the Department of Education, Schools Division of South Cotabato and Koronadal City, and the 5th Special Forces Batallion. As stipulated in the MOU, DOST XII will promote and implement the ICT related projects for the advancement of DOST XII and recognizes the benefits of establishing Science and Technology Academic Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Stations or STARBOOKS in South Cotabato, while the DepEd South Cotabato Division and DepEd Koronadal City Division with its benefiting schools will manage the operations and sustainability of the STARBOOKS Units.

Present in the MOU Signing were Engr. Sammy P. Malawan, CESE – DOST XII Regional Director, Ronald Jim Somera, AO V – Schools Divisions of South Cotabato, Cyril Forro – City Schools Division of Koronadal City, LTC Zandro P. Alvez – Batallion Commander 5th Special Forces Battalion, Dr. Estrellita B. Lacuesta – Operating In-Charge Indigenous Learning School, Inc. and Engr. Mohammad Naif Z. Abdulazis – PSTO South Cotabato.

In his remarks, Director Malawan said that, with this DOST Digital Library, S&T information will be more accessible to every student in the province, including those learners in the far-flung areas. “This project is not only beneficial to the students but to the teachers as well because STARBOOKS will give them a lot of SciTech gen,” he added.

Afterward, a Basic Orientation on the Usage and Advantages of said Digital Library was conducted by the DOST Team and officially handed over the STARBOOKS Units to the 30 selected schools and educational institutions in the province, where the participating school heads received Desktop PCs and Kiosks for the STARBOOKS Server and Terminal.

One of the main objectives of this activity is to conduct and train each appointed IT staff of every school on how to operate, run, and maintain the features, functions, and utilization of the First Philippine Digital Library – the STARBOOKS.
